Repeated episode of acute watery diarrhea; a case of celiac disease in non-endemic area

Abstract


Food allergy is an important problem that might result in acute gastrointestinal problem. Of several allergens, gluten is a widely mentioned problematic substance. The gluten is observable in several food products made from wheat and the allergic reaction to this disease is common in the Western. The specific disease namely celiac disease due to gluten allergy is well-described but there are only a few reports from tropical Asia. In this article, the authors present a case of a Thai female patient who visited the physician with history of repeated episode of acute watery diarrhea and positive stool occult blood test. The gastroscopic and colon-enteroscopic examination show no significant pathological finding. The allergic test showed positive test and confirm the allergy in the patient.
